The Number Of The Beast 2005
3rd January 2005
|
Twenty-two years after the release of
the original single, Iron Maiden decided to re-release a new and updated version.
The videos – the Camp Chaos version of the original promo video and the live
footage of the song filmed at Brixton in 2002 – are pretty nice to watch, and
the live renditions of 'Number Of The Beast' and 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' (did they intend
to counter-balance a song dealing with satanic rites with another invoking the name of God?)
had never been officially released before, which makes them somehow "new".
However, was it really necessary to release such a single? The newer fans would say yes,
as most weren't even born at the time of the release of the original one – or they were
pretty young anyway! – whereas the older fans would simply argue that the record company
is only trying to make money out of the faithful Maiden fanbase who would buy just about anything
that the band releases. I leave you judge of that...
